Home of American History

Cincinnati actually began as three settlements; Columbia, North Bend, and Losantiville. Named in honor of President George Washington, Fort Washington was built in 1789 to protect the three settlements. It wasnt until 1790 that the name of the settlements were changed to Cincinnati. It was named to honor the Society of the Cincinnati, whose name came from a roman general and dictator, Cincinnatus. The society favored a civilian existence as opposed to military rule and thus the city of Cincinnati is home to a very large number of the descendants of military soldiers whom were granted lands in the state as they returned back to civilian life.

Home of Innovation

Cincinnati Ohio is home to a long lists of 'firsts for the United States. Cincinnati is home to the first professional baseball team(1869), the Cincinnati Red Stockings. It is the first and only city to build and own a major railroad (1880). In 1902 the Ingalls Building was built, making it the first reinforced concrete skyscraper ever built in the US. In 1952 the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center developed the first heart-lung machine, forever changing the medical field by making open-heart surgery possible. Then in 1954 it became home to the first licensed public television station – WCET.

Employment

Looking for a city with a high employment rate? Cincinnati is home to Americas favorite banana company, Chiquita Brands International. Fortune 500 company Proctor & Gamble is right downtown and started out here in the greater Cincinnati area manufacturing candles back in 1837. We are also home to the American retail supermarket chain, Kroger. Altogether, nine Fortune 500 companies and fifteen Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered in the Cincinnati area

Entertainment

How about a little entertainment? We have the award winning 'Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra that performs in the historic Music Hall. You can also check out the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Located in the heart of downtown Cincinnati, it was designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli. Dont forget to visit the Great American Ball park! Located on the winding banks of the Ohio River right here in downtown Cincinnati, Great American Ball Park serves as the home of the Cincinnati Reds. Feel like getting a little wild? Stop by the Cincinnati Zoo! Rated as one of the top zoos in the nation by the Zagat Survey, The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is the second oldest Zoo in the country.

Education

Education here in Greater Cincinnati is second to none. The Cincinnati Performing Arts school has noted graduates such as Nick Lachey. It was also the location for the TV show "Taking the Stage". Founded in 1819, the university of Cincinnati is a public research university offering many opportunities for college students in 304 programs of study. The College of Mount Saint Joseph ('The Mount) is a Catholic liberal arts college that offers bachelor and graduate degrees in a wide variety of programs.

Healthcare

Greater Cincinnati has one of the leading childrens hospitals named simply "Childrens Hospital". Good Samaritan, noted for its Cardiovascular wing, is the oldest and largest private teaching and specialty health care facility in Cincinnati. Christ Hospital is one of the nations leading heart transplant hospitals and offers services in cardiac care, women's health, major surgery, cancer, behavioral medicine, and orthopedics.

Remember "WKRP In Cincinnati"? The legendary (yet fictional) syndicated blockbuster started in September 1978 and ran for four seasons with 88 episodes. For the next decade it became one of the most popular sitcoms ever to hit television.
